A Wandering Ronin is Ambushed by Bandits – Dark Horse Comics: Usagi Yojimbo

[MUSIC PLAYING] [STOMACH RUMBLING] EIZO: Hey, you. I’m hungry. Give me some of that. Didn’t you hear me? I want some of those
rice balls! MIYAMOTO USAGI: No. If you had asked courteously,
I would have gladly shared my meal. But I cannot condone
your rudeness. Perhaps you can ask again,
politely this time. EIZO: I just take what I want. Hiya! Yow! He can’t get away with that. Now you’ll be sorry. Hey, samurai, wait! MIYAMOTO USAGI: What
is it now? EIZO: I’m Eizo. I ran away from my father’s
farm to become a samurai like you. MIYAMOTO USAGI: Peasants cannot become samurai warriors. Be content with what you are. EIZO: No life of eating
rice muss for me. If I can’t be a samurai, I’ll
be an outlaw– a life of adventure for me. MIYAMOTO USAGI: Better to
be an honest farmer. EIZO: Like I said, no
life of mush for me. I want someone to teach
me to use a sword. Let me travel with
you, samurai. Maybe I can learn something. MIYAMOTO USAGI: If you wish. I am called Miyamoto Usagi. EIZO: I want the fighting
life with the sword! The sword is more than
a weapons, Eizo. EIZO: What do you mean? MIYAMOTO USAGI: Only the bushi,
the warrior class, is allowed to wear the
twin swords. EIZO: Ha, take that,
evil dragon wizard! MIYAMOTO USAGI: They are the
samurai’s soul, symbols of honor and loyalty, and never
to be used to bully others. EIZO: I would never do that. MIYAMOTO USAGI: One who uses
his swords only as weapons does not follow bushido,
the warrior’s code. EIZO: But what about
swordsmanship and skill. MIYAMOTO USAGI: The skillful
swordsman is not necessarily the better swordsman. EIZO: What a bore. I left home for adventure,
but I had more excitement back on the farm. MIYAMOTO USAGI: Ah,
here’s an inn. Are you still hungry? EIZO: You bet! Well, at least he’s
got some money. INNKEEPER: A meal for two? Yes, sirs. EIZO: Tell me about
your battles. I bet you were in
a lot of fights. MIYAMOTO USAGI: I try to avoid
fighting if I can. EIZO: He won’t fight, huh? Well, he must be a coward. I can’t stay with him. Too bad. He seems nice. Well, at least I got
a meal out of him. MIYAMOTO USAGI: That was
an excellent meal. INNKEEPER: Thank you, samurai. You are too generous. EIZO: I’ve got to find someone
else to learn from. MIYAMOTO USAGI: Well, we
can be on our way. EIZO: It’s getting late. I think I’ll head back home. MIYAMOTO USAGI: That
it’s a good idea. Goodbye, Eizo. GANG LEADER: Hey. MIYAMOTO USAGI: Excuse me. It was my fault. GANG LEADER: Huh. Watch it next time. EIZO: Wow, these guys
really look tough! GANG LEADER: It was a good thing
he left, or I would have thrashed him. Innkeeper, sake. INNKEEPER: Yes, sir. EIZO: These guys I can
really learn from. What great role models! GANG LEADER: Hey, kid, what
are you looking at? Come here, kid. I said, come here. GANG MEMBER: What do
you want with us? INNKEEPER: I want to join
your gang, sir. GANG LEADER: Look out, guys. This kid’s a cutthroat. What makes you think
you can join us? EIZO: I want a life
of adventure. And you guys are tough, not
like that coward samurai. He just had a lot of money. And he thinks he’s
such a big shot. GANG MEMBER: A lot
of money, huh? GANG LEADER: And
a coward, too. GANG MEMBER: Such people
shouldn’t be allowed to have money. GANG MEMBER: We’ll take
care of that. GANG MEMBER: Thanks
for the tip, kid. EIZO: Hey, where are
you guys going? Can I come too? GANG LEADER: We’re going
to catch up to that friend of yours. Our purses are empty. EIZO: But you can’t Oh,
he’s a nice guy. He even bought me lunch. GANG LEADER: He won’t be buying
any more lunches after we’re through with him. Thanks, kid. EIZO: Osagi-san, look out! GANG LEADER: He’s going
to warn the samurai. EIZO: Ow! GANG MEMBER: Stay out
of this, kid. You’ve already done your part. EIZO: They’ll kill Usagi-san
for sure, and it’s all my fault. I’ve got to do something
to help him. Poor Usagi-san is such a wimp. There’s no way he can survive
against so many tough guys. Oh, no! I’m too late! GANG LEADER: You refuse to hand
over your money, huh? GANG MEMBER: We’ll just
take your purse, then. GANG MEMBER: After
we’ve killed you. We don’t like to leave
witnesses. GANG LEADER: Kill him! GANG MEMBER: Hiya! GANG MEMBER: Ooh! GANG MEMBER: Ooh! GANG MEMBER: Urgh! EIZO: Huh? He’s defeating them all. GANG LEADER: He’s a tiger. I’ve got to get away. MIYAMOTO USAGI: Stop! GANG LEADER: I’ll get even
with you someday. You set us up, kid. I’ll start my revenge
with you. EIZO: No! MIYAMOTO USAGI: Eizo. Eizo. EIZO: I want my daddy. Daddy! MIYAMOTO USAGI: I guess he
realizes a life of mush is not so bad after all. CONCRETE: Interesting. I’m not ready to save the
world this morning, but let’s do this. Start a file called “Has

I liked the music and sound effects. Voice acting could have been better, but it was okay and I could get used to it. They did a good job animating this. I like the movement in motion comics.

In addition to what Johnmorrisbeck said, the voiceovers for this and the Umbrella Academy are disappointing.

I really enjoyed the comics. That said, the pacing is fast, not allowing the sweeping vistas and scenery from the original format to shine through. I understand the irony of calling the great bunny samurai usagi Yojimbo too quick but there it is.

I think this story worked well as an introduction to the comic. I at least wanted to read more (if I could find time). VA wasn't stellar, but acceptable to me.

That's Awesome!! I didn't mean to sound like I don't like the Usagi though. I love the Usagi as well.

ok….im a sucker for anything about feudal asian culture, but that was a seriously painful first impression. tails from sonic was like arnold schwarzenneger next to that kid. seriously the most annoying voice ive heard in a while. but i still watched, and when the action began, the majority of the scene was zooming on the kids face while he said how badass the samurai was. i mean, i assume this is aimed at children, but still. the voice actor for the samurai was solid tho

I wasn't a big fan of the earlier Dark Horse motion comics, but I Love (and have been following) Usagi and Concrete for quite some time! Good job G&S and DH!

I'm not sure I care for this.
I just don't think that the rabbit bodyguard stands up all that well in this "half way between comic and animation" medium.
Go back and look at the books. Look at the way Mr. Sakai frames the action. You never seen Usagi's sword stroke. We only get to the cell for the grimaced faces of his opponent's last gasps. Maybe some tasteful blood. That's the power of it, why you believe Usagi is that good.
Here the action just looks muddy.Oh and the voice acting is terrible

awful voice work. Sounds like one of those awful PBS educational cartoons for pre-schoolers

I support G&S, the dark horse projects, even the visual work done here. That voice work was really, really bad. Painfully bad.

kind of cool but should have more usagi not the kid but I do like the moving black and white part mange style instead of the classic anime style that most mange ends up being

Kid's voice sounds a lot like Karol from Tales of Vesperia…probably not the same VA, though.

Ahhh, I loved this comic!! Nice to see it come to life. Not overly fond of the American accents, but at least they're pretty decent American accents. xD

Yay Usagi!  So glad to see he's still around and loved by so many.  I remember him from when I was a kid in the 80's.  Great memories…

Well done.  I'm so glad for all that Dark Horse has done over the years for comic readers.  Usagi would have never had much of a chance at DC or Marvel.  Dark Horse is the perfect home for him.  And still going strong after all these years.  Many thanks!

Very interesting. I'll have to look into the Usagi Yojimbo comics 🙂 He should have his own animated movie!

I'm really going to miss Usagi Yojimbo. I've just about read every comic and I hope there'll be more.

I really dislike child characters. They are annoying and distract from the more mature main characters. Same goes for Kintaro from the usagi episode from tmnt.

I love 3D instead of animation. But this was really good. I still think it blows that Usagi doesn’t have his own show! He really should and his own video game. I mean, he was in ninja turtles, but he should still have his own.

Great work on this! Where did you get the voiceover artists? They sound familiar, especially the kid…
