Cool Bits – Donkey Kong Country 3’s Christmas Secret & Hidden Codes

And this time we’re checking out the cheat
codes of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble–including some that are just
a little more meta–and festive–than your typical code Okay, so Donkey Kong Country 3 is filled to
the brim with secrets, but one of the lesser known ones is the ability to enter all kinds
of cheat codes on the file select screen. Now in order to enter a cheat code, simply
highlight one of the file slots, then using the controller, press L, R, R, L, R, R, L,
R, L, R This will activate a text field where you can then type in any one of 9-different
cheat codes. So, for example, if you want to make the game
a bit easier, try entering LIVES–or Lives– which will start you off with 50 extra tries. And if that’s not good enough, try typing
in ASAVE, which is short for auto-save, to have the game automatically save after every
level. But be careful, because using either of previous
codes may have the game permanently remind you of that fact by changing your rank to
“Cheatin’ Chump” on the High-Score screen And speaking of being a cheater, this next
code has a little secret all its own. Okay, so normally in order to access the levels
of the secret world Kremotoa, you’d have to pay Boomer the Bear using Bonus Coins that
you collect from the Bonus Areas hidden in all over the game. And since some of those
Bonus Coins are actually hidden in the very levels he unlocks, it’s actually impossible
to give them all to him at once… Unless that is, if you enter WATER–or water–as
your code.. This will allow to enter the waterfall in the bottom-left left side of the map to
find a secret challenge that’ll award you all 85 Bonus Coins at once. Yep, that will
save you a ton of effort–but your lack of effort won’t go unnoticed. Because check out what happens if you stop
by Boomer’s again and try to unload all 85 Bonus Coins at the same time. Yep, he’s
on to you and your cheating ways–although he seems a bit shocked by the whole thing.
It’s pretty neat to see a character respond directly to an act that, from his perspective,
should be impossible;le Alright, so that covers it for making the
game easier, but what if you actually want to increase the challenge. Well, in that case,
you can try entering HARDR–or Harder–on a NEW save file–yes, it actually had to be
a new file, as it has no effect on existing ones. Doing so will remove some of the DK
barrels found throughout the game, making many of the levels quite a bit more challenging.
Oh, and if you can manage to finish the game this way, while finding all the secrets–
you’ll earn a 104% completion rating instead of the usual 103. But if 104% isn’t good enough for you, then
try typing in TUFST instead–or Toughest. Now if you enter this on an existing file,
all checkpoint barrels will be removed, with only a lone banana bunch in their place. But
if you enter it on a NEW file, not only will all the checkpoint barrels be replaced by
banana bunches, but so will almost all of the DK barrels too! Ouch! But if you can survive
the pain, you can actually earn the maximum 105% completion rating! So that’s all of the codes that have a direct
impact on the gameplay, which leaves just 4 more that are a little bit different First up is ERASE, which simply resets the
best time for Riverside Race. Yeah, it’s not terribly exciting Next up we have COLOR, which slightly changes
the appearance of both Dixie and Kiddy. Now one of the better ones is MUSIC, which
activates the game’s music test, allowing to listen to every song in the game–including
a very special one that normally can’t be found anywhere els…except via the next Cheat
code. But first, do you remember how some of the
Bonus Areas challenged you to collect either all the stars or bananas within a certain
time? Well check out what happens if you enter MERRY–or
merry–as your cheat code. Okay, well nothing at first–BUT, let’s see what happens if
you happen to stumble across one of those bonus rooms. Huh, that music sounds just a
little more cheerful than usual, doesn’t it? And well would you look at that! The stars
you’d normally collect have been replaced by Christmas Tree ornaments! And if you complete
the bonus area, you’ll even be treated to a new holiday jingle too. Now let’s see what happens if we head to
a Bonus Area that challenges you to collect bananas instead. Well would you look at that,
they’ve been swapped out for little Christmas presents! Aww isn’t that nice! It really
helps put you in the holiday spirit, doesn’t it? No wonder the code is short for “Merry
Christmas”–It’s just a neat little present from the developers themselves And we think that’s a pretty Cool Bit!

    When I re-re-re-re-re-play DKC3 (every 1-2 years), I use MERRY code if it's december 🙂
Also I use COLOR and TUFST.

Donkey Kong Country 3 is a bit underrated I think.
I love it the best, the SNES music, world map, etc.. I hope Retro Studios start to get inspired by this one next. 🙂

Some guy found an easier and faster way to get K.O's in Cruel Smash with Link… go to the edge, grab them and b-throw them. Also other way with link is using the up-b the same way as Lucina to go back to the battlefield.

And they say Donkey Kong Country 3 was the worst one just because of Kiddy Kong and the lack of David Wise for most of the soundtrack. I'd say it's the best one if it wasn't for those two things.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Luigi might appear in the audience in a battle, sometimes donning his Poltergust 3000, from Luigi's Mansion!

I'm proud that I played through DKC3 with the TUFST code, not only do you get 105%, but also a slightly alternative ending, with the ranking of "Immortal Monkey" (or something along those lines) at the end!

Love this game sooooo much 🙂

Ah yes, I remember spending plenty of hours on this game trying out some of those cheat codes I learned from a gaming website years ago. Using the MUSIC cheat to listen to it's music as much as I want, the MERRY cheat giving the bonus levels a Christmas theme and the TUFST code to beat the game on it's hardest difficulty to get it's 105% completion ranking, giving me the best ranking in the game along with a cool little reward in it's results screen. Good times.

Thanks so much for making this. I'm probably one of the few people who likes DKC3 more than the other two and it's probably one of the more overlooked games in the series, since it's rarely covered by retro game reviewers or channels.

COOL BITS idea: in luigi's mansion dark moon, if you stand still for a little bit some things can happen, if your in the clockwork world outside, luigi will sneeze, in the ice mines, he will shiver, in the towers, lighting will show up and frighten him, and i'm sure there are many others.

My little sister, MistyBlaze on Miiverse, found this while playing Sonic and the Secret Rings. There are certain places in the game where you can find Big the Cat. You're given hints on the last tab of the special book and if you wait in the areas hinted at in the game, the camera will cut to Big doing something and when you beat the level, you'll get a page of his Traveler's Journal.

Well, I personally didn't like Donkey Kong Country 2 & 3 all that much. After the first installment (which is a total masterpiece on its own), I feel the game lost its charm in the second and third installment for some reason.

Anyways, I think Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze were good installments in the series overall (even though I don't like how EASY these last 2 installments are compared to the original one). :

I have an Idea: Kirby Super Star has the rock power. Using rock sometimes can make you a gold Mario statue or a golden Samus statue. Then in Kirby super star ultra you can be a Coo statue, Rick Statue, Kine statue, Mario Bricks, golden Samus, Golden Mario, and a golden HAL brick! I'm not even done yet! In Kirby's return to dreamland you can be a statue with Kine, Rick, and Coo, You can be a golden 8 bit Kirby, A Dragoon, a statue with the star rod and the block powers, Golden meta knight, Marx,  and a golden HAL block. In Kirby's dream collection with Smash you can be Marx, Dragoon, gold HAL block, Gold 8-bit Dedede, gold 8-bit Kirby with 20th on the top,  gold magalor,

I did not know about ASAVE, HARDR, and ERASE. It seemed like only yesterday, I would be adding those codes in… except TUFST. I will never go for the 105%, until I can pass the game a few times.

I have one that I have been trying to get you guys to do. In Kirby: triple deluxe when you go to level 4-3 (world 4 level 3) and beat that boss at the end don't go through the door. Look in the background and you will see a framed picture of a cat. I think I was the only one to find it because I can't find any videos of this or pictures or anything.

One of my favorite cool bits:
In the original Lego Star Wars: The Video Game, on the Attack of the Clones level "Discovery on Kamino," there is a room in the long hallway that is host to a "rave party" secret. I know for sure it was in the PS2 edition, but I'm not sure about the others.

The code: "ERASE" not only reset the time record for riverside race, but also erase the ranking in "All time greats" (the ranking shown in Crancy's TV at the end of the game). So, if you are going to use erase make sure is not in a complete file, otherwise you're max score (103, 104 or 105) will never be display again, since you can not save the game once it is completed (I don't know why ;'c ).

In Super Smash Bros 3DS when Olimar wins a battle with 1 or 2  pikmin his victory scene will have that number ex. like when you win with 1 pikmin at the last second his victory will have that pikmin and its color, unless its different.

And yet, this game (along with the earlier game in the series) is still in limbo on Nintendo's Virtual Console. I'm sure Nintendo paid Rare to make this game. Why is it still not available?

Secret for the Mario Kart 8 dlc:
Tanooki Mario's tricks go to the tanooki's ability to turn into a statue, another coolbit is that tanooki mario's horn, is the sound effect that plays when Mario flys with the tanooki suit in Super Mario bros 3

Theres a litle cool bit on mario 3D world for wiiU that not many people miss, at all. What i ment i that on the game theres a lot of references to old mario 8-bit. People usually see one, or two, bu theres tons! Like in the fairy house, the first bird from left to right, scare it and behind a 8 bit mario will pop up, in the 6-1 theres one near the stamp as siluet behind the glass pipe. And lots more, like floating around or in a wall, in the weird sabana place theres a mountain with its shape! Its really cool

The only Cool Bits I could recall at the moment come from Metal Gear Solid 1 for The PSX. The first few come from the famous cardboard box, or rather boxes in that game. Your given 3 boxes and checking the description of each tells tells you the name of a location where you got the box. Using box 1 in the area where you get box 3 means that enemies have a higher chance of lifting it, as the area listed on the first box is really far away from the snowy field/melting plant where you get it. The boxes serve as a fast travel point as well. In the game you will find 3 cargo trucks you can enter, all look the same. If you get in a box on the truck and wait a few minutes, a guard will come by, make a comment and drive to the area written on the box.  Quite a lot of details for a simple stealth item.

I entered the alternative color cheat for my file and it gave me a strange glitch. When I was trying to obtain the bowling ball for Bazookas Barracks; The ball would not show up in my item slot even though the enhance for Blues present was exchange. so I'm forever unable to get that last Banana Bird! I'm curious if this has happened to anyone else before.

    I have a few questions.
1st Question; does the Color code change the color of the flag on the map?
2nd Question; what's the point of the Water code if you can't even use the bonus coins you get?
3rd Question; did you even know about the secret at the end if you get 105%?

  50. Plain dude

1:51 I actually got around this anti-cheat thing. Here's what I did: I got 15 Bonus coins legitimately, THEN I got the rest by cheating and Boomer actually let me unlock all of the Lost World levels!

That in itself should have been at least mentioned in this video but I did it here so…

  51. Agu Fungus

    May 31, 2019 12:02 am

About the MERRY code, my guess is that its music was meant to be used for the snow stages, but because the music was eventually changed, the MERRY code was made to not put the music to waste, which explains why it also has the lose and stage clear jingles.
