Time For A Foal Feeder (Mom is NOT happy!) // Versatile Horsemanship

so manzer would really like to get into
the corner of the stall there and get to the little bits of grain that are on the
floor but he can’t put his head down any further than that so he can’t reach it
so this is what he does every time he can’t get to something he gets frustrated he’s like I want to reach the grain too we’re Mainzer can’t put his head down
because of whatever he’s got going on with his back I have a straw bale with a
feeder upside down on it and then his feed pan on top of that hopefully he
doesn’t knock it down I’m gonna get him a feeder oh there it goes when I lower
it down to here just on that straw bale so it’s a couple feet off the curb foot
and a half off the ground he can’t reach it it’s very hard for him so but if I
lift it up another six inches he can reach it just fine look at that funny tongue I’m gonna get
him a feeder and install it at the just the right height for him so he can eat
and I think I’m gonna get one of those little creep feeders so his mama can’t
eat his food I’ve been working on
I bring Nica in and I put her in a stall and then Mainzer gets to come into the
other stall and eat his grain they’re right next to each other they can hear
each other and I leave his doors open so he can wander out so he can just go
right out this door and around to her door right there so this is just temporary I’ll get this
fixed in the next day or so he’s got a little injury of some sort on his back
and that’s why he can’t put his head down we’ll get him all set up with the right
stuff my hey chicks nuts have been so helpful for this little guy with his
injury as you can see Mama’s eating off the
ground but he prefers to eat out of the net because he can’t reach the ground so
it works out really well this is gonna go on he’s gonna be sore probably for
six weeks or so so this is a really great way for him to be able to munch on
hay without having to try to put his head down so it’s not as stressful for
him then he’s able to still eat otherwise he could get pretty stressed
out about that and we don’t need any more stress for this poor little guy something we’re doing today is
installing a full theater Nico is helping yeah but Nica has gotten to the
point where she is quite the piglet and when I put a bucket for Mainzer she
finishes her grain and then immediately goes for his so he’s not really getting
anything and now with him since he can’t put his head down to eat right now we
put this at a at a height where he can reach it and we’re gonna be adding back oh she’s gonna be try to stick her
tongue in there so we put it on we put it on at first and the bars were a
little too wide and she was able to put her head in there so now we made him
more narrow so he’ll be able to eat out of there yeah watch me pull this off but
I’ll stand back over here so you can see but we pulled everything out of here we
clean out that we clean out this paddock every every year and as you can see
there’s nothing in here there’s just straw and some hay down that I put for
Mainzer but we got rid of that great big pile that was in the middle so now it’s
just a big dry lot but anyway so I’ve got some sand and gravel on order it’s
actually showing up with my birthday so that’ll be exciting and we’re gonna fill
this in probably with it about six inches or so
so it’ll raise it up a little bit so we didn’t want to put it any lower because
poor little guy can’t reach it otherwise but yeah so we’ll see how much of that
green is gone when I come back and check so hopefully he figures it out pretty
good thanks honey little buddy manzoor why don’t you come over here and check
out your little feeder okay I love when he crosses his legs go check it out
right here why’d you switch him forward a little
bit yeah yeah it’s good see you can put his little head in there oh gentle huh so we’re gonna come back later and
this thing’s gonna be like a bouncy toy cuz Nikola ripped it out of love it’s
gonna be like ooh jollyball yeah he’s like it’s boo hmm
to be a jolly ball here she comes dragon I am determined to move these balls
I can make my lips go very long I will look at it she’s gonna try to lick it
out humans I’ll show you not only will I rip these out I will
follow them and cost you $2,000 into vet bill that’s a fact that’ll teach you put
something in here that I can’t play with mind you for trying to keep me away from
food cute little tail the bugs are so bad right now
I did just fly spray them too but it does nothing she’s like I got bugs and
food I can’t reach but he’ll figure this out he’s pretty good about eating out of
a bucket so he’ll go get it figured out in no time just trying to eat it yeah all right
let’s move on we’ll see if when we come back it’s
still there corny guy it’s like I’m just gonna sit here and do this don’t keep
her busy yeah probably probably I don’t remember
how much that thing was I bought a bunch of grain and stuff too at the same time
so it feels kind of bad such a tease but it works all right it’ll it’ll be good
for him to have stuff available all the time instead of taking him in you know
when she gets her grain taking him in a stall then he can just have what he
needs it’s been two days and this little guy
is just starting to figure out his feeder I had to fill it up pretty high
for him to actually like get it so and I really kind of want those bars to be a
little wider because I don’t think that he was comfortable reaching the bottom
so um yeah as long as I have it filled to the top he understands it but he’ll
get it and there it goes it’s he he can’t push his face in there
too far and he really wants to fling the grain around he likes to when the grain
is in a feed pan he likes to put his nose in it and kind of run his nose and
circles around in the bottom of the pan so he really wants to do that and that’s
the but he can’t so it works in that middle the middle one is a
little bit has a little bit bigger opening than the two side ones so he’s
got to figure out that he can only put his nose in the middle and I think if we
just move the bar over on one side just a little bit Nica won’t be able to stick
her nose in there but if we move if we move it over two holes she can so we got
to adjust it again but trial and error at least he’s kind of got this figured

Have you tried a horse chiropractor? Really the longer it goes on the worse for him as it sets in.

Poor little Manzer. He is so cute. When will he be able to eat normally again ? I know this kind of ailment takes long to heal. Mom is really frustrated..

    September 20, 2019 12:15 pm

I wouldn't waste anymore money on that fly spray and find some that works. Yeaaaa! He figured the feeder out, what a great mommy you are 💕 I sure hope his neck and back get better soon sending prayers and gentle hugs.

Nika was trying so hard to get the grain but she just couldn't. Yay now Manzer can eat his grain, I bet he's saying thank goodness mom isn't eating up all my food.

He may need to stretch that neck to lengthen the amount he can reach. After healing time of course. Or he may surprise you and do it all himself next spring when that grass starts growling and its just too delicious to not get.

Whoever invented the foal feeder is a genius! Although it appears that Nika does NOT agree. Loved watching Manzer smacking his lips over his grain – thanks for sharing this with us!

Has anyone ever installed a giant fan and convinced their horses to stand in front of it to make it difficult for the flies to be around them? Would that even work?

    September 20, 2019 1:32 pm

Will that affect him as he develops? Will he need special treatment before taking on carrying a rider in the future?

I was watching a trainer who does mustang rehabilitation and she brings in a massage therapist to help with the injuries they receive when the feds transport them to the holding pens.

He’s got such long legs it’s such a long way to stretch that neck. The good thing is its years before he’s a riding horse so plenty of time to heal anything and any trapped nerve may well be freed in a growth spurt and general development. All that kicking flies is really shaped his hindquarters he’s got a great bum, already!

Thank You! The lesson horse I have for Natural Horsemanship is dark brown (Bay?)… is the dark shade around Mazer's mouth and eyes natural coloring as he's aging? So much to learn but I'm working on it.

My mare is a piglet too. Our baby in now a year old and his mama still tries to steal his food. Looks like Manzer is starting to loose his baby fuzz around his eyes and muzzle. My foal looked like a buckskin until he shed the baby fuzz. It was such an awkward stage. It looked like he was getting beat up. His color is now a smoky grullo.

He will eat the feed play with the pail and then eat the straw bale. Lol. Nika is chubby😁. I bet she will break that feeder.

What a gr8t idea. Mica (sp❔) was so frustrated. Did she finally give up? I thought she would figure out how 2 remove the bars. He is so cute. Looks his fur is almost grown (ing) back from his bad diarrhea episodes when he was younger.

@2:12 this noise normally makes me annoyed when humans do it, but coming from him is so cute. he is adorable.
horses and their food eh? looks like sometimes even mother horses give up their babies for food! i mean it seems so unnatural for us humans for mothers wanting to eat their babies share and feel unhappy for not having it; but not so for horses…fascinating!

oh i just figured out that the mother horse does not know the grains are for her baby. oh poor thing. how frustrating.

Aww bless him he’s so cute getting his grain off the bale and so clever to work out the wall feeder. Nika is beginning to look a bit portly from getting Manzer’s grain, now you’ve put a stop to her gallop she should slim down again. When will she be back to work? Have to admit they are a cute looking pair.

Bless his little heart. He's so cute and sweet. I'm glad you have those nets for his hay. Nika, you are a naughty mom to steal from your baby!! Oh, she doesn't like that foal feeder – ha ha Nika! I'm laughing at you. Mom, can I borrow your tail? Mine's too short to get the bugs. Yea Manzer, you figured it out!

So glad you found a solution to feeding the cutest little guy! I think Horses naturally graze on something throughout the day in the wild, so keeping his stomach from being empty too long hopefully will keep the ulcers healed. Yay Manzer and nice job Brandi! ❣🐎 Hope his back will be better sooner without all the pulling to try to reach his food. Is Nika still nursing? Is she genuinely extra hungry from making good mares milk….or is she just being a stinker ? Thank you for for sharing the journey ! ☺️💕🐎

Have you considered building an open foal feeding stall with a bar that he could walk under to get in but she couldn’t so he could have his regular bucket.

    September 21, 2019 7:03 am

Take a look at 'Living Tradions' recipe fly spray, she got it from ''Art and Bri'. Love your videos' poor wee Manzer with his sore neck but clever humans for fixing his new feeder.

  49. BarbedStar

    September 22, 2019 12:17 am

Just wait until the mare learns to grip and lift the front of the feeder and then lets it snap back to the wall which throws the grain up to the front where she will snag it out with her tongue! Had these feeders all through the barn for my Arab foals for years. I swear the mares taught each other how to do the trick to get to the foal food!! Added another plate on the inside lower wall of the feeder which stopped the snapping and robbing through better attachment, but the feeders looked like they had been through a war! You are doing a great job with the foal.

Try "Creep feeding" instead. Foals can go under to a Safe place. The mother Needs food as well. She is thin and is nursing a big foal. She is obviously Hungry.

The foals are so cute! But why do the colts have penis out so much? I've noticed in baby elephants that their penis is out when they're being aggressive like when charging vehicled😄
